UN warns of locust infestation in North Africa

In June and July, swarms of desert locusts are expected to spread across North Africa, particularly in Libya, Tunisia and Algeria. This was reported by the Libya Observer, citing a forecast by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

According to the FAO, both mature and immature swarms of locusts are still forming in North Africa. The immature insects are expected to begin flying soon and may merge with larger groups in northern Libya, Algeria and Tunisia. In addition, the summer breeding season for locusts will soon begin in northern Niger and Mauritania.

The FAO also reported large swarms of insects north of the Libyan city of Ghat, south of Ghadames and near the town of Sebha. Smaller swarms have been observed in Tazirbu and south of Bani Walid, where locust larvae developed throughout May and continue to grow in June.

The organisation called for increased monitoring and control efforts in Libya and other North African countries to prevent the swarms from becoming a serious threat to food security in the region.

In March, desert locusts began entering the Tunisian city of Dehiba (Tataouine Province) from Libya. The spread of the insects is being facilitated by climatic conditions favourable to their reproduction — namely, frequent rainfall and abundant green vegetation.
